Veteran Nollywood actor, Olaiya Igwe, has opened up about one of his biggest regrets in a recent interview. The actor revealed how he disappointed renowned gospel singer, Tope Alabi, on her wedding day by refusing to lend her his luxury car as promised.
According to Olaiya Igwe, the incident occurred years ago after he acquired a luxury car following the success of his hit movie. Tope Alabi and her husband, Soji, had approached him with a request to use the car as their official wedding vehicle, to which he initially agreed.
However, as the wedding day approached, Olaiya Igwe had a change of heart. He explained that his decision was influenced by an unfortunate experience he had just gone through, where his newly purchased car was stolen by robbers in Ibadan, Oyo State. Although the vehicle was later recovered, the ordeal left him deeply shaken.
Fearing that something similar could happen again, Olaiya Igwe began to reconsider his promise to Tope Alabi. As doubts crept in, he decided to avoid the situation entirely, stopping answering Tope Alabi’s calls a day before the wedding and refusing to hand over the car as promised.
This last-minute decision meant that the couple had to make alternative arrangements for their transportation. Despite the passage of time, Olaiya Igwe admitted that the guilt of disappointing Tope Alabi has stayed with him.
In his words: “Tope Alabi informed me about her wedding, and I just bought a car ‘V boot’ at that time… I stopped picking her calls a day before the wedding. I didn’t give her the car.”
Olaiya Igwe acknowledged that Tope Alabi has since become highly successful, with multiple luxury cars that far exceed what he could have offered her at the time. The actor’s revelation serves as a reminder that regrets can linger, even after many years.
