The Lagos State Government has announced the temporary closure of the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, inbound Marina/CMS route, for emergency repairs. The closure, which will last for two months, is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 19, and end on Monday, May 26, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the closure is necessary to carry out essential repairs on the bridge. During the repairs, the section of the road from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to Independence Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic.
Additionally, the Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge service lane inbound Independence Bridge will be unavailable to motorists. However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe will remain open to traffic.
To mitigate the impact of the closure, the Lagos State Government has advised motorists to use alternative routes. Motorists heading to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way are advised to use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue inbound Akin Adesola Street, proceed to Falomo Roundabout, and then link Obafemi Awolowo Road to access Ring Road.
For those heading to 3rd Mainland Bridge, the recommended route is through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue inbound Akin Adesola Street, Alfred Rewane Road to Osborne Road, and then Ring Road.
Motorists heading to Inner Marina and CMS will also be diverted to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue inbound Akin Adesola Street, with connections to Falomo Roundabout, Obafemi Awolowo Road, and J.K. Randle Road/King George V Road.
The Commissioner for Transportation assured Lagosians that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be actively managing traffic flow along the affected routes throughout the duration of the repairs.
The Lagos State Government appeals to motorists and residents to bear with the temporary inconvenience, as the repairs are necessary to ensure the safety and security of road users.
