The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to immediately lift the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing the move as “patently unlawful” and a blatant violation of her right to freedom of expression ¹.
The suspension, which was handed down last week, was reportedly due to allegations of “speaking without permission” and refusing to occupy her new seat in the Senate chamber.
In a scathing open letter dated March 8, 2025, SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, warned that the organization would pursue legal action if the Senate President fails to comply with their demands within 48 hours.
The move has sparked concerns about the erosion of democratic principles and the silencing of dissenting voices within the Senate. As the clock ticks down on the ultimatum, all eyes are on the Senate President to see how he will respond to SERAP’s call to action.
