The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued an ultimatum to Governor Simi Fubara, demanding the immediate removal of all 19 commissioners and political appointees who were not properly screened by the lawmakers.
In a letter addressed to the governor, Speaker Martin Amaewhule stated that the appointments of these officials violated constitutional provisions, specifically Sections 192(2), 192(5), and 195(1) of the 1999 Constitution ¹ ².
The Assembly has given the governor 48 hours to submit a fresh list of nominees for the State Executive Council and other vacant offices. The lawmakers argue that the current appointees were not screened and confirmed as required by law.
However, the Commissioner for Environment, Sydney Tambari, has dismissed the Assembly’s actions as baseless and politically motivated. He claimed that all commissioners were properly screened by the former Speaker of the House, Edison Ehie ².
